Critical Analysis of the Movie
Introduction
This movie, “3 idiots,” is an inspirational and comedy film that came in 2009, which is co-written by Abhijat Joshi and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The story of this film is almost identical to Chetan Bhagat’s popular novel “Five Point Someone.” This film is based on our Indian education system, which is stressful for students and only considers high grades as the key to their success. Aamir Khan, as Rancho, plays the role of a brilliant student who motivates his friends to pursue their passion and make their lives from it. Sharman Joshi as a Raju who pursues engineering with the intention of rescuing his family from extreme poverty. R.Madhavan as Farhan who wanted to be a wildlife photographer but was forced to pursue engineering because of his strong father. Boman Irani as a ViruS playing the role of a highly competitive and foremost engineering college director. Kareena Kapoor, as Pia, plays the role of the virus’s daughter and falls in love with Rancho (Aamir khan). This film includes the scene of different flavor; confrontation with the professor, the ragging scene, funny speech, and the emotional scene at Raju’s home. Overall, the film features a wonderful mix of humor, skepticism, and motivation. The music for the film was very comforting, with heart-touching lyrics, and the background music also supports the film throughout the movie.
Synopsis
Raju, Farhan, and Rancho are three engineering students sharing a hostel room at Imperial College of Engineering, one of India’s leading colleges. Rancho is a little different from the others, who study only for learning, not for marks. In his own unique way, Rancho is provoking the wrath of the college director, Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) (Boman Irani).
Rancho indirectly blames this education system for the death of one more student (Joy Lobo), who hanged himself in his hostel room. Actually, Joy had asked for an extension on his major project submission because his father had suffered a stroke, but ViruS (director) refused. Threatened by Rancho’s talent, ViruS calls him an “idiot” and repeatedly tries to end Rancho’s friendship with Farhan and Raju by writing a letter to their parents.
In this contrast, the model student for ViruS was Chatur Ramalingam, aka “Silencer” (Omi Vaidya), who sees a high profile in a prestigious college as his ticket to a higher social status, corporate power, and therefore wealth. Meanwhile, the three students continue to be angry with ViruS, though Rancho continues to come first in all tests, while Chatur remains second, with
Farhan and Raju definitely in the last two positions. The reason for Raju’s last position is the status of his family because he is always staying negative and depressed, whereas Farhan actually wants to be a wildlife photographer not good interested in engineering. Despite Raju’s poor grades, Rancho challenges the ViruS that Raju will definitely get some job after his graduation, as ViruS disrespects Farhan and Raju for their poor grades in front of the whole batch. During the awards ceremony, Rancho makes fun of Chatur by including obscenities in Chatur’s speech; after knowing this, Chatur challenges Rancho to meet after ten years in the same place to see who is more successful.
Meanwhile, Rancho is also dating the Virus’s daughter, a medical scholar Pia (Kareena Kapoor). One day, the three friends drunk and enters ViruS ‘house at night to allow Rancho to ask Pia for a marriage, and then Raju urinated on the door of ViruS’s’ house inside the compound before fleeing. The next day, ViruS threatens to rusticate the Raju if he does not mention Rancho’s name instead of himself. Now, Raju was unable to choose between betraying his friend or lowering his family, Raju slips out of the third-floor window to commit suicide, but after extensive care from Pia and his friends, he awakes from a coma after two months. At the same time, Farhan had received a letter from brazil, which gives him an opportunity to become a wildlife photographer. On the other, this suicide incident has changed Raju’s perspective. With his new attitude, Raju went for an interview in a wheelchair and gave a series of straightforward answers without worrying about the outcome. Farhan also successfully convinced his father for becoming a wildlife photographer. After knowing this, ViruS commits (as he was challenged by Rancho) to make the final exam as difficult as possible so that Raju won’t graduate. Pia hears him, goes out from home, and picks up the keys to ViruS’s office. She tells Rancho about the ViruS plan, then Rancho and Farhan go into ViruS ‘office and steal the test paper and give it to Raju, but he doesn’t care about the prospect of failure and refuses to cheat and throws away the paper.
However, ViruS catches the three and expels them on the spot. However, they found relief when ViruS’s pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labor at the same time. Due to the powerful storm, all the traffic, roads and electricity had cut down. At that time, Rancho generated the power using car batteries and a power inverter that Rancho had a dream project, and ViruS had laughed on it. Rancho then successfully delivers Mona’s baby with the help of an integrated Vacuum indicator (he invented at that instant). As the baby is born dead, but Rancho finally wakes him up by saying “ALL IS WELL”. After noticing their intelligence and humanity in delivering Mona’s baby without any medical support, ViruS reunite, Rancho and his friends and permit them to write their final exams and graduate. During the convocation, Rancho comes first and is offered a ViruS’s pen, which the professor had kept for decades before finding a student smart enough to give it to him.
The story is set as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years after Chatur promised revenge on Rancho for humiliating him on the speech night and promised more success than Rancho ten years later. After losing contact with Rancho. Raju, Farhan, and Chatur set out on a journey to find him. Chatur is also looking forward to signing an agreement with a well-known business scientist and a business partner named Phunsukh Wangdu. When they found Rancho’s house, they went to his father’s funeral, and found a completely different Rancho; he was Jaaved Jaffrey. After accusing the young man (Jaaved Jaffrey) of stealing their friend’s identity and benefiting from his intelligence, the young man(Jaaved Jaffrey) took a stand and told them the whole story that their friend was a son of the poor working-class and he loves to study and he, the real Rancho, was a rich kid who did not like to study, so after noticing this both the family agreed to let the servant boy study in place of Rancho (Jaaved Jaffrey).
The real Rancho revealed that the fake Rancho is now a schoolteacher in Ladakh. Raju and Farhan then find Pia and take her from her wedding day to meet the Rancho. The fake Rancho and Pia now rekindle their love, whereas Chatur humiliates the fake Rancho (as he is now a schoolteacher), before leaving the place. When Farhan and Raju asked him what his real name was, he revealed that Phunsukh Wangdu, and after that, Chatur was shocked and on his knees, accepting his defeat and continuing to plead his case with Phunsukh to establish the business relationship he was pursuing.
